Swannick, originally from Barry, is a South Wales favourite. His latest music video titled Still Not There was released just before xmas. Check it out here:
We had the chance to chat up with Swannick. Here's how it went:
Where was the Music Video filmed?
We filmed the video on location at Simon O' Conner's house. Simon has always been so supportive of my music and the Welsh scene in general!
Who produced the Music Video?
The video was produced by Capture Films. I've recently linked up with them again to take some photos for my EP. I'll be able to tell you more about that soon.
How long have you been rapping?
I first started writing rhymes about 8 years ago but always seen it as more of a hobby, only since the start of 2020 did I join Gutterbreed and start releasing music professionally.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
The music I make tends to be so personal to myself it can change on any given day but I think I'm at my best when I'm reflecting on my negative experiences. I've often turned to music in dark times. Sometimes somebody else has captured the situation you are in perfectly and being able to relate to something really creates that personal connection between artist and listener for me. Back in 2015 I realised my love for using music as my own stress release and as a tool to get out my inner most thoughts and feelings. Having this freedom of expression has been really good for me as I have a lot to talk about in my life and people seem to want to hear it.
What is your creative process like?
I don't really have a set creative process. I usually just write in my spare time, stack a load of lyrics and then take them to one of the producers I work with to create something unique and original. Minas is an absolute wizard when it comes to production and he's producing the EP currently.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
My dream collaborations would be the likes of Loyle Carner, Frankie Stew & Harvey Gunn and Jesse James Soloman. If we're talking in Wales - I'd love to work with Reepz, Mikey Holden, Fernquest. The list goes on.
What is your favourite song to perform?
Mate, I can even remember what performances are. Nah, for real though my 2016 banger "Depleting" always seems to go off when I play it. Only show I played in 2020 was an online festival for BBC Horizons, that gave me an opportunity to play some new songs and is still available on the BBC website.
Which famous musicians do you admire?
I admire anyone who's had to work their ass off to get where they are today. My biggest musical inspiration would have to be Mac Miller. He changed the game. RIP Mac.
What sports do you enjoy watching?
I used to love sports as a kid but I defo became more focused on music at some point and kinda drifted away from it. The only sport I do/watch these days is Skateboarding. What's more exciting than seeing someone chuck themselves down a huge set of stairs? Not much.
What is your biggest/weirdest fear?
I can't believe I'm about to make this public information and I know I will live to regret it. I have an irrational fear of ketchup! The smell, the taste, minging. Come at me with a bottle and you will catch a swift elbow to the jaw.
What’s your biggest screw up in the kitchen?
Well, about 10 years ago me and my good friend Sean were trying to cook something once. We were at another friend’s house and we managed to set his kitchen on fire. I panicked and tried to escape and the door handle came off in my hand. Genuinely thought I was a goner.
What is your favourite song and why?
This one was really difficult but I'm going to say 'Frankie Stew and Harvey Gunn - Tortoise ft. Joel Baker & Ashley Henry' Just listen to it - it's beautiful.
What’s coming for you in 2021?
Sounds cliche but 2021 is my year. Will be starting the EP Rollout soon, doing some more work with BBC Horizons, looking for additional funding and having fun along the way. 2020 was such a mess that I think we all deserve to excel this year!
