ORIGINALLY PUBLSHED IN 2016 SHORTLY AFTER THE BATTLE ON A PREVIOUS UCW BLOG.

Our intention is to critique Welsh Battle Raps. We do not wish to cause offence but do want to call it as we see it.

We score each battle on a round to round basis giving each battler a score out of 5 based on lyrics, presence, crowd control, confidence and ability. We then add the scores up to give a final result and winner.

This battle is hosted by Ferny Mac and Saykridd. This is Pryme Cut Entertainment's first doubles rap battle featuring JDC & Slick Trickz Vs Gater and Ill Dyl.

We know JDC and Slick Trickz well at UCW, they have both been battling with Pryme Cut for past few years and have gone from strength to strength.

Gater and Ill Dyl are new to the scene appearing in just one battle previous to this against each other – a somewhat strange partnership perhaps because after watching that battle it was clear there were some issues between them – whereas JDC and Slick Trickz are like brothers. We imagine this battle will have a tight performance from JDC & Slick against a much more unpredictable partnership in Gater & Ill Dyl.

Before they battle starts you can notice Gater and Ill Dyl seem very relaxed compared to JDC and Slick who look pumped and prepared. Gater and Dyl look like they have smoked one to many spiff’s before this battle. Big mistake leaving JDC & Slick start on their part, we believe this will come back to haunt them.

Round 1 starts just as to be expected with JDC and Slick holding nothing back, invading space, playing to the crowd, finishing each other sentences and interacting with one another, dropping huge punch lines and using their voices to fill the room. Everything you want to see from a battle rapper(s).

Score - 5

Compare those qualities now to Gater and Ill Dyl. We never intend to offend anyone but we’re struggling to put this into a context which will not do that. The boys look disinterested, self-asserted and very distant from the crowd and their opponents. We were not to taken back from their one on one battle against each other either, but that was a better performance than this one. Their bars are below average, they have no connection with each other and simply put, this a really bad performance from both of the members of this team. Gater has a very poor vocabulary range and does not have a clear voice, Ill Dyl doesn’t add much creativity to this performance, and even disses Gater his team mate. An all-round poor performance. If this continues JDC and Slick will stroll away with this performance.

Score - 1

Round 2 is just a continuation of what has played out in Round 1. JDC and Slick Trickz are destroying their opponents with their punchlines and delivery – but what is killing them even more is their connection with each other. JDC and Slick are well rehearsed and on point whereas Gater and Ill Dyl look the complete opposite. JDC and Slick Trickz are very strong competition and are proving a point in this battle. Another solid round.

Score - 5

Gater may be the worst performer in Pryme Cut’s History. Every time he finishes rapping he laughs like what he just said was amazing when his bars are below average at best. At this point the crowd is laughing at him, not with him. There's not much we can say about this performance other than it's poor.

Score - 0

Round 3 and the same thing keeps happening. JDC and Slick continue their impressive bars and delivery. The duo is very well organised, they have a clear understanding of what is expected of their selves and from each other during this battle. This is the tag team known as JDC and Slick Trickz at their best.

Score - 5

Dyl and Gater do nothing to improve their chances of winning, even throwing a cheap shot at Saykridd one of the event organisers, a silly move. Ill Dyl is better than Gater in every area and is carrying his teammate for sure. He has a clearer voice, he’s louder and simply has better bars. Although we would argue even this does very little to enhance their collective performance.

Score - 1

Conclusion

We really enjoy the Doubles Battle format and JDC and Slick Trickz for us would be tough competition for any duo, however Gater and Ill Dyl are way below the standard expected to battle effectively. A clear victory and a standard night for JDC and Slick. Gater and Ill Dyl have got a lot of learning to do to compete effectively. However, credit to the pair for turning up and giving it a go. At least they didn't choke but that is probably the only positive we can find in their performance. We hope they continue to learn the art of battle rapping and would do well to model a rap battle partnership on thier opponents.

Winner JDC & Slick Trickz

Final Score 15 - 2
