Kenny Candence, originally from Consett County Durham, currently living in Mold, North Wales, has released his latest project which is an EP entitled Karmic Debt 2 : Absolution. The EP is produced by a producer from Sweden called Lost.Mindd and co produced by Kenny Cadence himself.
Take a listen to the project here:
We had the chance to ask Kenny Cadence some questions. Here's how it went:
How did your journey with music start?
My music journey started when I was 15 / 16 in high school. I remember sitting in an English class and a girl called Donna who was sat behind me had the Slim Shady LP on a cassette. She let me borrow it so I could make myself a copy. From there I started scribbling rhymes - really bad ones lol! As the next couple of years went on though I would bunk off college and just walk around with my portable CD player a couple of albums, pads, pens and Hip Hop magazines in a backpack, trying to learn more about the genre and culture and also working on my writing.
What music are your listening to lately?
In terms of recent releases I’ve been playing Skyzoo’s ‘All The Brilliant Things’ and Joell Ortiz’s ‘Autograph’. I always have my brother Brinkworth’s album ‘Leap of Faith’ playing somewhere during the week too. Having said that I’ve not checked nearly as much music as I normally would as I’m in my own creative space at the minute.
What inspires you most?
I know it’s cliche but my life in general is a massive inspiration to my music. From my childhood to my teenage years, and then having children of my own and wanting to give them a better life. My music is something that I love to get really personal on. Not only is it like therapy for me but there’s a chance that somebody that hears it has been through something similar, or going through something similar and it helps them too. Brinkworth is also a massive inspiration to me. For me he’s the best in the UK and to be in a duo with him (Hate Being Sober) is something that I never take for granted. I have learned so much from him. I get really inspired by the producers I work with too. Grammy nominated producer Taylor Made It, Lost.Mindd who just hit a million streams on one of her releases. Justin Case who has been a great friend of mine since 2008. We’ve created so much together. And last but by no means least Scott Saunders / Suski. What a talent! Just being around the man, hearing what he creates and listening to his knowledge inspires me to be te best possible artist and think about the overall music so much more too.
What would be your dream collaboration?
There’s a few people I’d love to work with from Grieves, Mike Shinoda, Method Man, Logic and Jon Connor. I have however got to work with one of my dream collabs on a Hate Being Sober song. It features Sha Stimuli who I have been a massive fan of for over a decade so to get to be on a song with him is like a dream come true.
Have you ever experienced writers block? If so how did you overcome it?
I have literally just come out of the worst writers block I’ve ever experienced. Once I dropped Karmic Debt 2 back in May I’ve struggled to get back into the music. Normally I’d just write and write until something works but this time around I just took the time out. Spent time with family, playing computer games, watching wrestling etc and just let it run its course. I spoke about a lot of personal things on this EP that clearly needed to come out so I had to allow myself to recover from putting those songs out.
How long does it usually take you to write your songs?
It depends really. I find when I do songs with people whether that’s a collaboration on my song or featuring on someone else’s song, those tracks happen quickly. If it’s my solo stuff I’m way more critical and can sometimes take up to a couple of weeks to write a song. The way I look at things is something that one of my best friends Stu taught me - if it still hits after a few weeks, or a month or 2, then it’s worth putting out.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
I’ve managed to collab with some great artists over the years. Brinkworth, Justin Case, Brighty, Abi Nyxx to name a few. If I had to think of someone off the top of my head right now in Wales it would be Mace the Great.
If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
I’d love to open a show for Sha Stimuli or Grieves. I think my music would match the feel of the gig really well.
What is your favourite song to perform and why?
Again I have a couple of these. No Complaints would be one which is taken from the Heir Theory project produced by Taylor Made It. Gorilla Position is a song I start my set with. It’s a Hate Being Sober song and is produced by AraabMuzik - the energy just sets the tone perfectly. But Done Wrong / Done Right are songs I that I most enjoy. Done Wrong is taken from Karmic Debt 1 and Done Right is from Karmic Debt 2.
Which famous musicians do you admire?
I’m going to mention the producers I work with here. Taylor Made It, Lost Mindd, Justin Case and Scott Saunders. For me these are 4 of the best producers / musicians you can find. I say I work with the best and I fully stand by that statement.
What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?
That would mean I got caught, right?
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
It’s something that everybody would have been told at least once in their life and it’s ‘take your time’. It’s so simple but if you really think about it, it applies to nearly everything as a creative.
What would you like remembered about you?
Somebody who had fun, put everything he had into his career and be respected as a writer.
What’s next for you?
Myself and Lost.Mindd have a NFT coming out which will be dropping on January 1st. It’s going to be an EP with a couple of alternative artworks designed by my good friend Stu. And I believe I’m the first hip hop artist in not only the North East of England but the whole of Wales to announce a musical NFT.
I am also working on Heir Theory 2 with Grammy nominated producer Taylor Made It. Hate Being Sober have a project in the works. I am also working with Justin Case on my first full length solo album which will be dropping next year. On top of all of that I will be launching an independent record company with Lost.Mindd in the new year called Delusional Child Music Group.
