Jai Capone, from Cardiff originally but has recently migrated to Mallorca in Spain. Jai has always been a consistent artist and a pleasure to follow. From indulging in vlogs peeking into his life to following his constant releases, he’s a very good artist and his latest release is another track in a style only he can do. Check it out below:
We had the chance to ask Jai Capone some questions. Here's how it went:
Who produced the audio for the track?
The audio for the track ‘Taste Success’ was produced by me.
How did your journey with music start?
My journey in music started in 2005, I discovered my love for music on a
creative level. I was listening to 50 Cent’s album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ for
probably the 100th time and I remember I was walking to my aunties house
who lived a few streets away from me at the time, and I was listening to
“Many Men”. Something in the creative part of my brain clicked and I had
this sudden urge to start writing. The song was magical to me, I couldn’t
relate to the song as such but it showed me a way that I could use my voice.
That night, I wrote my first line and I’m still going today, 16 years later.
What music are your listening to lately?
The music that I’m listening to lately is mainly Rap & Hip Hop, I’m currently
going through Benny The Butcher’s catalogue. But I’m listening to a lot of J.
Cole, Russ, Tech N9ne and Nipsey Hussle.
How long have you been rapping?
I started to rap a few weeks after I started writing, I had a couple of friends in
school who were rapping, so that encouraged me to start, so I used to go to
their house after school and we used to write and use instrumentals that
they had on their brother’s computer already released.
What would be your dream collaboration?
My dream collaboration would be with Tech N9ne. He is my favourite artist
and has been for so many years, so to collaborate with Tech would be
awesome!
Have you ever experienced writers block? If so how did you overcome it?
I have experienced writers block, in the beginning I would just leave writing
for days, sometimes weeks and sometimes I would get inspired when I’m at
work or in the city centre somewhere and that method never works. Waiting
for inspiration is like waiting for a bus, it can come at any time and it’s easy to
miss. Now I use a different method, I just write a terrible song, I get all the
junk out of my head and then I start fresh. I write almost every day so I don’t
get much writers block these days.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Describing my music has always been difficult for me, but I would probably
say its Alternative Hip Hop with elements of dark and experimental.
What is your creative process like?
My creative process is very specific actually. I wake up at 6am, do my morning routine, where the first thing I do is switch my Mac on in my studio. After I have made my coffee there is one of three things that I do. I will start
producing an instrumental, I will write a verse for whatever song I’m
working on at time or I will spend an hour watching interviews with
artists before I start writing or producing.
What pet would you love to have?
I don’t have a pet that I would love to have, I wanted a dog and now I have
two dogs, which are both rescue dogs.
Who is your inspiration?
I have a few sources where my inspiration comes from, Nipsey Hussle, Russ,
Tech N9ne and me. I follow artists who are prolific and who empower and encourage others to take ownership and me because I’m the only one who tells me I can keep going, that I can be better, that I have what it takes to create whatever I want.
Where would you like to visit?
I don’t really have a place in mind at the moment, but it used to be Norway and Denmark, I always liked the look of those places and I have been to Sweden and I felt at home there.
What plans have you got for 2021?
My plans for 2021 was to release 1 song a week for the year with the goal of
improving my writing and rapping skills, however, I made it to 16 releases in
16 consistent weeks and now I am resting. During this pandemic I have
moved from Wales to Mallorca but have lived in 4 different parts of the
island within 8 months, so for me to keep releasing music and expecting it to
be amazing is just crazy. I’m always writing and I’m always producing so my
plan is to just keep working and create videos for the music that I have.
