DW Smith - Fenrir

Writer's picture: Urban Culture WalesUrban Culture Wales

DW Smith, from Cardiff, who told us he's originally from Asgard, and we believe him, released this Music Video titled Fenrir as the 2nd single from his EP Edda back in June last year. The theme of the track emulates Norse mythology and it runs as a theme through the EP. Check the Music Video here:

We had a quick chat with DW Smith. Here's how it went:

Where was the Music Video filmed? The video for Fenrir was filmed in Leckwith, Cardiff, we wanted somewhere that had trees but also had kind of a post-apocalyptic urban feel. Who produced the Music Video? Jacob crofts for ripper media. I gave him the concept and he smashed it. He also brought order some of my mad ideas. What was the trigger point that made you decide to get into music? My school had lottery funding and got a recording studio, I was always into hip hop and writing lyrics but then had access to a studio so starting recording tracks. They were awful but it got me addicted to making music, I learnt how to make beats shortly after so that I could craft my own sound. What is your suggestions for the newcomers? Be yourself and don't imitate. Obviously you will always have inspirations but expressing who you are through music is way more rewarding than acting like what’s popular. Have you ever experienced writers block? If so how did you overcome it? Yeah, had it a few times but the longest was for a few months before we went into lockdown. I've found not stressing about it or trying to force it is the best help. I get inspired by loads of things, music, films, mythology, history, life etc. So I’ll just take all that in whilst trying not to think of making music myself. If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be and why? So, I've been in to Norse Mythology for the past few years, it inspired me to mix it with hip hop and I have an EP out called "Edda" which uses Norse Mythology as a metaphor for most of the topics in the EP. I've listened to a lot of Norse mythology inspired music looking for samples or inspiration and came across a group called Wardruna. I'd love to open up for them as I think my style of hip hop would go well with their music. What is your favourite venue to perform in? Do you have any upcoming shows? I think it’s got to be Clwb Ifor Bach. The sound is always so good there. I miss Gwdihw, loved how intimate it was and it only took like 50 people to feel like it was a packed show. I’ve got no shows booked yet due to covid, can't wait to start gigging again when all the craziness is over. What do you like doing in your spare time? Skateboarding, graphic design, drinking mead and raiding villages with my drengrs.

Who is your celebrity crush? I don't really have a celeb crush, J-lo still looks hot! She used to be my crush in my teens. I had a crush on Rihanna for ages as well. Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones maybe?!

What’s next for you in 2021? My new single is out on the 29th of January it’s taken from my up and coming EP "Journey to Jotunheim" which will be out mid-February on Bard Picasso Record Label.

It’s a follow up to "Edda" using Norse myth as inspiration again.

I'm also working on my first full album which will be produced by DJ Alkemy and have a few collabs with some of the artists on the label.
