ORIGINALLY PUBLSHED IN 2016 SHORTLY AFTER THE BATTLE ON A PREVIOUS UCW BLOG.

Our intention is to critique Welsh Battle Raps. We do not wish to cause offence but do want to call it as we see it.

We score each battle on a round to round basis giving each battler a score out of 5 based on lyrics, presence, crowd control, confidence and ability. We then add the scores up to give a final result and winner.

This battle is hosted by Chew and Ferny Mac and within the first 30 seconds of the video you get an incline to the vibe of this battle. This is not going to be pretty. However, this is the style of Ddot, he wants to disrupt things as much as possible, this can seem to many as a negative way of battle rapping but say what you like, it can be effective.

Brave Mugraw is a top tier battle rapper in the Welsh scene and we are expecting him to give a solid performance again here. We have no idea what Ddot is going to pull out of the bag during this battle as he is continually disruptive throughout the introductions.

Round 1 – Brave Mugraw

Brave Mugraw starts off with some jokes and nice word play, but within seconds he has to tell Ddot to shut up. This is Ddot’s angle however, to keep the focus on him and disrupt his opponent as much as possible, and it works, because we’re know talking about him and not Brave Mugraw. The style may not appeal to many but nevertheless, if done right, can be effective and swing the battle in his favour. Brave continues unfazed by the antics so far to drop some more jokes and bars. He is a quality act without a doubt. Brave’s bars in this verse are quality, their disrespectful, on point, delivered well and meaningfully written. Ddot continues to be a nuisance throughout the round.

Score – 5

Round 1 – Ddot

This is where Ddot loses the plot, by saying what he does several times he’s completely lost the energy gathered from his angle. This is where we should see what Ddot can do, rather he’s playing down his performance before he has even started. Some of the crowd are even cringing for him at this point and he hasn’t spat a bar yet. When he does begin to rap he is cocky, arrogant and unpredictable. He chokes during the round and begins to call Brave Mugraw a legend and he also says he can’t compete, but at the same time giving off all the subtle body gestures that would suggest that he doesn’t fully believe what he’s saying. It would seem to some that Ddot just wants to be in the limelight and doesn’t really care for this performance at this point, however, his tactic is working slightly, in that he is sucking the energy out of his opponent and the crowd, its cringe to watch and the atmosphere of the battle is suffering because of his antics. The hosts even have to step in to call time. At this point it’s either genius tactics from Ddot, or someone just behaving like a complete fool just to have his name spoken about.

Score – 1

Round 2 – Brave Mugraw

Brave is clearly annoyed at this point. The second round begins and for a full 30 seconds we just hear Ddot off camera continuing his erratic behaviour. Most of the crowd are disinterested at this point apart from a few of Ddot’s supporters offering him words of encouragement. The battle is losing control by this point. Brave Mugraw however is a top quality act and when he starts his verse he drops an entire round full of bars. This is where one can say Ddot’s tactics are effective. The crowd should be going wild with some of these bars, but Ddot has destroyed the rooms atmosphere. Furthermore, we are talking about Ddot more than Brave Mugraw. Proof the tactic has some advantages. However, Brave Mugraw is a savage. He’s way too good to be overly fazed by Ddot. He’s obviously annoyed but holds it together to give a solid round.

Score – 4

Round 2 – Ddot

At this point Ddot needs to bring his best to even have a chance of getting a win. However, we feel Ddot has overstepped the mark in this battle now. We like mischievous antics, or an angle that may give a performer an advantage over his opponent, but this is borderline madness to watch. The “Your Mum” segment is dreadful, The A to Z scheme is difficult to listen to. The crowd have lost all interest in the performance and are even calling for time and shouting out which is probably the highlight of this round.

After a crowd member shouts “And T is for thank fuck that is over” a full minute of disruption ensues. The hosts try calling time, Ddot continues to be unruly, the crowd are laughing at him hard and all control of this battle is lost. When Ddot eventually starts again he delivers poor bars, cuts himself short and begins causing more chaos.

Score – 0

Round 3 – Brave Mugraw

After another minute or so of chaos Brave Mugraw finally gets to spit his third round. He’s clearly irate at this point but goes on to do what Brave Mugraw does best, deliver a solid round of funny, complex and savage bars. By the end of his round he’s tired of the antics now. In fact, everyone is, the whole room is against Ddot and Brave just wants to finish off as quickly as he can. The lyrics from Brave Mugraw are of a super high quality in this round and levels above Ddot. Brave Mugraw is one of the best in Wales for sure.

Score – 5

Round 3 – Ddot

This is just typical Ddot. Unpredictable, outrageous and disrespectful.

Score – 0

Conclusion

Brave Mugraw is a top tier battle rapper in Wales, he deserves a medal for keeping his cool during this battle. He has a seasoned flow which never fails to deliver, incredible bars mixed with some of the funniest and savage lyrics to come from our scene. Top quality act.

Ddot brought no real bars to this battle, no thought to rhythm, delivery or intelligent scheming. It seems apparent that what happened at this event is exactly what Ddot wanted to happen. Following this battle Ddot has been spoken of continually by everyone in the scene. Of course it’s all in a negative light, but we are speaking of him nonetheless. This sort of attention may not be what the majority of people would see as successful, but to some it is. Yet it seems, this is one of the most outrageous performance and silly acts to ever seen in Wales.
