Larynx Entertainment are a big deal in Wales. We love what they do for Welsh Urban Music and the support they give artists. The Welsh scene is better because of them. The team, which is based in Wrexham, has now devloped their brand into a nationwide reaching brand and aims to continue their succsess into 2021.
Co-founder Dave Acton also creates a little music now and again and we're happy to share it with you below. Check out Blue by Dave Acton:
We had the chance to ask Dave Acton a few questions. Here's how it went:
How did the journey with music start?
I remember being on a family holiday in Tenby, driving about somewhere and Purple Hills, D12 came on the radio. I just remember being mesmerised by it. Ever since it’s been all about hip-hop. My own music making didn’t come until much later down the line and even then I’ve not done anywhere near enough to say I’m an active artist. As of now I’m enjoying supporting those involved in the Welsh scene.
You created Larynx Entertainment. How did the project come to be?
The project is actually an extension of Voicebox, which is Wrexham’s spoken word night. Don’t let the usage of “spoken word night” fool you into thinking it’s all poetry. It’s had all sorts happen there. It’s creator, and co-founder of Larynx, Tim Humphreys-Jones and I decided enough local rappers had passed through to try and get them all together and work towards establishing a hip-hop scene in Wrexham and the original format of Larynx was born. Shouts to all those that got involved in that, that felt like a monumental moment at the time.
Who helps you with Larynx Entertainment?
So we’ve got Tim who acts as like a voice in my ear most days. Pete, who is co-director is there to slap my wrist if I spend any money and we’ve got Danny who handles our videography and laughs at my own attempts. None of us look like we should run the shop, never mind run a business but we make it work. They’re all top lads and extremely talented in their own right.
Larynx Entertainment have become a prominent name in the Welsh Urban Scene. What drives you to be so active?
The fact that pretty much every other area of the UK seems to have some sort of spotlight on it whilst Wales seems ignored. You can’t tell me the likes of Mace, Luke RV, Mr. Phormula, Brave Mugraw, Razkid, etc don’t deserve the same acclaim and attention that upcoming artists in other parts of the country get. There is an element of paying dues and grafting of course, and I suppose it all comes down to the artist too, what spotlight they wanna be in: whether they wanna be chart topping artists or underground kings. At the time we started doing what we do I just felt the scene was shunned. Fortunately, over the last year or two there have been great strides made in exposing the scene more and hopefully that continues. We’re but a small cog on the wheel and we’ll just try and help as best as we can.
What is your creative process like?
Horrible. As I say I’m not the most active artist you’ll find. I don’t know sometimes whether it’s writers block or I just don’t give it enough but I struggle to write anything for ages, sometimes months. Then I just have a burst of inspiration and write something half decent then repeat the cycle.
What do you like doing in your spare time?
Watch rubbish on YouTube, maybe have an hour on FIFA. I don’t get a lot of spare time to be honest but yeah those are the go-to’s. Mostly watch battle rap videos, big fan of that.
Where would you like to visit?
I’d like to travel America, mostly for the food. I’ve made it a personal goal to try and meet each and every artist we come across with Larynx too so hopefully that’ll get me around Wales. Not a driver so there’s the challenge but we’ll do it somehow.
What is your favourite movie and why?
Pffft…I dunno. There’s a lot for a lot of different reasons. I did always really enjoy 4 Brothers with Mark Wahlberg when I was younger, even though I watch it now and it’s pretty run of the mill. But yeah there’s loads: Whiplash, Boyz In Tha Hood, Warrior, The Truman Show…the list goes on.
What would you name your boat if you had one?
The Floater
What’s your biggest screw up in the kitchen?
I once put noodles in the microwave without water and was convinced the smell of burning was the fat they were barbecue flavoured. That was a good one.
What plan’s do you have for 2021?
Keep trying to support artists in Wales as best as we can at Larynx. I’m hoping Covid shifts by the end of the year so we can look at events, however unlikely that may be. Yeah, just keep tabs on the artists. I’ve myself a personal goal of dropping a project sometime this year titled “Everything I Want To Say, I Say It Better Here” so if that’s of any interest to you keep your eyes open for that.
