Ferny Mac's Brain Melt

Writer's picture: Urban Culture WalesUrban Culture Wales

Ferny Mac is a Cardiff legend in the Hip Hop scene. He's done it all, from Rapping, Producing, Holding Events, Battling, Beatboxing and much more. He's continuing to release music as many artsists come and go - Ferny has been here for the long ride and we hope there's still plenty to come from such an outstanding artist. Check out his latest video below:

We managed to ask Ferny Mac some questions about his latest music. Check out the interview here:

How did the journey with music start?

I originally got into proper underground Hip-Hop by hearing tracks from skate videos. I fell in love with Jurassic 5, Ugly Ducklin, Redman & R.A The Rugged Man etc. My good mate Dai who skated with me, knew my cousin Kevin who I hadn't seen for a while. When we all started hanging out, Kevin introduced me to the world of Underground Hip-Hop. His CD collection was nuts and introduced me to so many dope artists. Joe got on producing so this is what inspired me to eventually start writing my own stuff.

What’s different about your next album?

My next album "Back To The Roots" is actually going to be my full Hip-Hop only album. I've mainly done Hip-Hop but always mixed it up and I've never dropped a full on 100% to the core Hip-Hop album, so back to the roots we go, which is also a meaning for starting again as I feel the Rap game needs it. The Back To The Roots album was due to be done Summer 2020 but has been delayed, probably till close to Summer this year now.

You can Rap, Produce, make beats, Beatbox, edit videos, is there anything you can’t do?

I can't seem to find any sane women to date. Any help?

What inspires you to keep making music?

I have struggled to find inspiration in general, but working on the new Core3 album kept me active. I have been doing a bit less recently but I think that's due to how much I did in a small space of time so I've needed time to recoup but back on it now!

Can you remember the first time you wrote a song? Describe it for us.

The first song I ever wrote was a story style song about a guy who had his ex wife take everything from him to the point by the 3rd verse he off's her. Based on a true story, being such a romantic and all. I remember the opening and how cringe I sounded. Thank fuck that never seen the light of day.

What is your creative process like?

I like being alone to make music, no distractions and I can fully focus on what I'm doing. Whether that be production, writing or recording. With beats I tend to go with the flow see what's working and what's not. Live beat jamming I've already sorted the sounds so I know what style I'm going for off the bat usually and as for writing when I don't have writers block I usually get a song written, recorded and mixed in the space of a few days.

Who’s your favourite new comer to the Welsh Urban Scene?

Be sure to check out Vision, Pun Ra's boy. He's smashing it for sure!

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

The best advice I been given? Probably keep things simple and if it doesn't feel right don't do it. The amount of things in general people unnecessarily over-complicate is pretty annoying. Keep things simple and to the point, be honest with yourself over anything else and be there for the one's you care for. The world is full of materialistic things. Things you can't buy such as family, friends and loyalty are the most important things to me personally.

Where can people find your music?

Check out my bandcamp for everything I've dropped. I have a few albums on Spotify/iTunes etc. Youtube and soundcloud. Just search Ferny Mac, you'll find me. Be sure to check out the new Core3 project “Them Dirty Demons” we recently dropped!
